For each day of the week...
Day 1
“Plan a safe escape” Make a plan to escape from your house in an emergency
- The best escape route is the normal route in and out of your house
- Think of a second route in case the first one is blocked
- Keep exits clear and have door and window keys near to exits
- Have a safe place for everyone to meet outside
- Practice your escape plan today
Day 2
“Test it Tuesday” Ensure that you have working smoke alarms on every floor of your house
- Test your alarms every week
- Put in new batteries every year (except for 10 year alarms)
- Replace Smoke alarms that are over 10 years old
- Make sure everyone in your home knows what to do if the smoke alarm goes off
- Check on vulnerable friends and neighbours, could your test their alarm too?
Day 3
“Make safety your key ingredient” Never leave your cooking unattended
- Half of all fires in the home are caused by cooking
- Never leave your pan or grill unattended
- Use only a "thermostatically controlled" deep fat fryer
- Clean hobs and grills regularly to prevent a build-up of fat which can catch fire
- Drinking alcohol and cooking is a recipe for disaster
Day 4
“Switch off portable heaters when they are alone”
- Where possible secure portable heater against a wall
- Keep them away from curtains and furniture at least an arm's length
- Never use flammable materials, aerosols or cleaning fluids near a lit heater
- Never leave children or pets alone with a portable heater
- Use a fire guard
Day 5
“Drive to Arrive”
- Don't use your mobile phone whilst driving Making or receiving a call, even using a 'hands free' phone, will distract your attention from driving
- Belt up; front and back! In a collision, an unbelted passenger can kill or seriously injure the driver or other passengers
- Don't drink and drive Any alcohol, even a small amount, can impair your driving so be a safe driver don't drive and drive
- Keep your distance Always keep a two second gap between you and the car in front
- Plan your journey Always plan your journey and allow extra time so you don't rush
Day 6
Business Fire Safety — “Be Prepared!!!”
- Carry out a suitable and sufficient Premises Fire Risk Assessment and Review Regularly
- Don't block escape routes and fire exits with any obstructions and "walk" daily
- Don't store combustible materials in escape routes, maintain as "fire sterile"
- Don't forget to continue testing fire safety systems such as: Fire Alarms and Emergency Lighting Systems
- Increase the collection of waste packaging from outside the premises and secure bins away from the building. This reduces the risk from Fire Setting and anti-social behaviour
Day 7
False Alarm Reduction — “Taking us away from a real fire”
- The premises fire alarm and detection system should be maintained in an efficient state, effective working order and in good repair — regular testing and servicing should be carried out
- Preventative measures can be taken to ensure continued reliability, such as appropriate detector heads and located away from sources of steam and dust etc
- False alarms cause disruption to your business, resulting in substantial costs, loss of productivity and inconvenience
- They erode confidence in the value and reliability of the system
- False alarms expose our communities to unnecessary risk as attendances for a real fire may become delayed
