Guidance notes on the selection stages

Application Form ^ Top

The application form plays a vital role in deciding whether a candidate should be brought forward for the selection tests so it is important that it is completed as fully and accurately as possible.

Shortlisting ^ Top

This is a very competitive process. All application forms are read carefully by the recruitment team who are trained only to use the information provided and not make assumptions.

Shortlisted candidates will be required to undergo a series of written ability tests designed to assess levels of literacy, numeracy, situational awareness and problem solving.

This just gives a brief outline of the assessments you would be asked to do. These will be split into written assessments and physical/practical assessments. You must successfully complete the written assessments in order to be invited back to complete the physical/practical assessments.

Interview ^ Top

References will be taken up at this stage. The interview gives the panel a chance to ask the applicant questions and assess if they can do the job and allows the applicant to ask questions about the job.

Medical ^ Top

Applicants who are successful at interview will be required to complete a medical questionnaire and undertake a full medical examination by the Fire Service Medical Officer. In addition applicants will be required to have a full eye test by an Optometrist. The Medical Officer’s decision is final. Applicants may also be measured for initial kit issue.

Appointment ^ Top

Following medical clearance you will be issued with an Appointment Letter. Recruit Firefighters will have a period of induction prior to commencing the training course.

Training ^ Top

The training comprises a residential course (Monday to Friday) where you will meet and work with other trainees from other Brigades.

The course is designed to develop individual skills, teamwork and to equip you with a sound understanding of the technical and practical aspects of a Firefighters role. By the end of the course you will be part of a team, positive in outlook with pride in yourself and in what you have achieved. You will also have been assigned to the Watch and Station where you will work.

Probation ^ Top

New appointments in the role of Wholetime Firefighter will be subject to a 3 year development period commencing from the first day of appointment.

During this period the firefighter will be continually assessed for competence against the occupational standards and continuing employment will be dependent upon successful completion of the development programme and achievement of NVQ Level 3 Operations in the Community within the agreed timescale.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is committed to equality and diversity at work. We positively welcome applications from disabled people and under represented groups. For the health and safety of our employees, we operate a no smoking policy
