Child Safety Week 18-24 June 2012

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is supporting Child Safety Week from June 18 to 24.

The brigade’s education Outreach vehicle will be at Meole Brace in Shrewsbury on June 19 and at the Asda supermarket in Donnington, Telford, on June 20.

Officers from the Community Fire Safety team will be on hand to give tips on home fire safety and how to reduce the risk of an accident in the home.

Some easy and simple steps to making your home safer include:

Student’s ‘Emergency Stretcher’ invention could prove a lifesaver

A portable rescue stretcher to allow firefighters to more easily haul unconscious or injured people out of danger has been designed by a University of Derby student – with input from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

The Rapid Evacuation Stretcher (RES) device was created by Craig Ball as a final year project for his BA (Hons) Product Design degree course, and is on display alongside fellow students’ products as part of the University’s 2012 Degree Shows.

Appeal for vigilance following Telford fires

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are asking Telford residents to be vigilant after three recent property fires where on two occasions rubbish was set on fire and a third incident where a sofa was set alight.

The first incident occurred at an empty property in Southgate at 12:07am Saturday 12th May 2012 where rubbish at the front of the property was set alight and caused damage to the gas and electric box and facia of the building.

New speed enforcement site on A458 Ford

The Safer Roads Partnership in West Mercia is launching a new mobile speed enforcement site on the A458 in Ford, Shropshire, following concerns raised by the local community about the speeds of drivers along the 40mph road.

The new site, which launches at the end of the month, forms part of the Safer Roads Partnership’s Community Concern programme, which responds to community requests for speed enforcement. Local residents have raised concern and asked for action to be taken to address the situation and improve the safety of the road.

Oswestry needs you

Oswestry needs new firefighters ready to turn out to answer emergency callouts in and around the town.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking for men and women to join the team of skilled firefighters at Oswestry Fire Station who answer about 400 calls each year to deal with house fires, road crashes, and a wide range of other incidents.

A recruitment campaign will be held in Festival Square, Oswestry, on Saturday, June 9 from 9.30am to 4pm when anyone interested can talk to firefighters.

Touring theatre show to highlight criminality

The issues of illegal money lending and arson are being highlighted in a touring performance, heading to local schools.

The England Illegal Money Lending Team are working in partnership with Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin Trading Standards, Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service and Zip Theatre to deliver the production ‘Sparx’, by Jon Lingard-Lane, which is partly funded using proceeds of crime money taken from convicted loan sharks.

Fire Service Awards

Long Service and Good Conduct Medals have been presented to 11 Shropshire firefighters and a member of the support staff at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service by the Lord Lieutenant of Shropshire after completing 20 years service.

“They have dedicated their lives to assisting Shropshire people and on behalf of them I want to thank you very sincerely. You have never let us down when turning out to homes, rivers or car crashes. When we need help, you will be there,” said Algernon Heber-Percy.

Shropshire couple praised for charity work after tragedy

A Bridgnorth firefighter who “worked tirelessly” with his wife to raise £35,000 for charity after the death of their toddler son has won a top award.

Ashley and Gemma Brown raised the money for Asthma UK after their two-year-old son Cameron tragically died from the illness.

The couple aimed to raise £25,000 for the national charity with the launch of Cameron’s Fund but beat their target due to “their complete dedication” to the cause and positive response after their personal loss, said Chris Metcalfe, of Telent.
