The aim of the Technical Services Department
To improve the safety of the people of Shropshire by ensuring the employees of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have the resources and supplier support they need to provide an effective, safe and efficient service

The Technical Services Department exists to support the Fire Authorities vision of "A Safer Shropshire" and its mission to "Save life, protect property and the environment and reduce the risks from fire".
The departments role is implicit in all 5 of the Authorities strategic aims but is most obvious in strategic aim 3
“Secure the highest level of safety and welfare for all staff and Authority members by providing effective leadership, training, equipment and systems of work”
and corporate objective 9
“Ensure the provision and availability of appropriate equipment,
resources and supplier Support”.
This corporate objective leads to the 6 key objectives for the department:

The department is structured around the specialist skills required to manage the range of resources and suppliers used by the service, these being:
- Property, managed by the Resources Director
- Operational equipment, managed by the Equipment Contracts Manager
- Non-operational equipment, managed by the Procurement and Facilities Officer
- Vehicles, managed by the Fleet Manager
- Hydrants, managed by the Contracts Manager - Water
These roles are all supported by a number of suppliers, maintenance contractors and consultants.
The department also provides an in-house maintenance service for vehicles and specialist equipment, managed by the Workshops Manager and procurement and environmental management for the whole Service managed by the Resources Director and Procurement and Facilities Officer.
The responsibilities of all department members are clearly defined in Job Descriptions and are monitored and reviewed through formal and informal processes, including:

- Multiple attendance at external meetings
- Formal Personal Development and Appraisal Reviews
