Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service workshops

The Service operates an in-house vehicle maintenance workshops based at our Shrewsbury site.

     
The Workshops team

They are the main contractor to the Service in maintaining vehicles, ladders, hydraulic rescue equipment and specialist electrical equipment and operate as a business under an internal contract (a Service Level Agreement or SLA).

The workshops team consists of a Workshops Manager and four Maintenance Technicians (LGV Mechanics). All are multi skilled and able to deal with the wide range of specialist appliances and equipment used by the Service.

All of our Vehicle Technicians are licensed to irtec standards approved by the Institute of Road Transport Engineers.

The team provides a full 24 hour emergency call-out service and are able to make good most defects at site using parts and equipment held on a mobile workshops van.

All workshops activities including the service, maintenance and modification of vehicles are covered by the Services ISO9001:2000 Quality Management System.

The workshops facility was subject to an independent external best value review in 2000 which noted many areas of good practice and efficiency. Its conclusion was that:

"Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service continue to undertake maintenance and repair of their vehicle fleet internally as this is the most cost effective method available."

A number of further reviews have shown that this continues to be the case.
