Firefighters are divided into two main duty systems: Wholetime Duty System and Retained Duty System.

Wholetime Duty System ^ Top

Personnel working this system work on average a 42 hour week and form part of a watch. Each wholetime station has four watches; this allows them to provide 24 hour cover throughout the year. The four watches are; Blue, Green, Red, and White. There are three wholetime stations in Shropshire.

Wholetime personnel can carry out development training at any time during their work period and are also involved in carrying out fire safety risk audits in the business community.

Retained Duty System ^ Top

Personnel working this system are on call from their place of work or from home. They have to respond to the fire station within five minutes of an emergency call. There are 22 Retained Duty System fire stations in Shropshire including two which are also staffed continually by wholetime personnel.

Retained personnel are allotted eleven hours per month for development training, this is normally programmed one evening per week but can also take place at a weekend.

Wholetime/Retained Duty System ^ Top

Wholetime/Retained are personnel that work on the wholetime duty system to cover their rota and in addition to this also provide availability on the Retained Duty System.
