What is the FiReControl project?

Currently there are 46 fire control rooms in England, based at local fire brigades. The FiReControl project is working to move from the existing system of control rooms into 9 new amalgamated Regional Control Centres.

Where did it come from? ^ Top

There has been much review of the Fire and Rescue Service over recent years. Indeed, a wide-scale programme of reform and modernisation is taking place throughout the whole service.

In 1999, the government commissioned Mott MacDonald to carry out a review of fire control rooms, resulting in a report which was published in April 2000. Following this, in December 2002, Sir George Bain carried out a further independent review of the fire service, entitled 'The Future of the Fire Service: Reducing Risk, Saving Lives'.

Much work was carried out in 2003 - the government published their White Paper 'Our Fire and Rescue Service' and Mott MacDonald updated their report 'The Future of Fire and Rescue Service Control Rooms in England and Wales'. The outcome has been the recommendation that the Fire and Rescue Service move to a network of Regional Control Centres.

Frequently asked questions ^ Top

Where will Shropshire’s nearest Regional Control Centre be?

The new Regional Control Centre will be based at the Wolverhampton Business Park just off Junction 2 of the M54

Who is funding the new Regional Control Centre?

The initial start up costs will be funded by the Government. Once each Fire Service's calls cut over into the new Regional Control Centre (RCC), the Local Authority Controlled Company (LACC) will start to run the RCC. The LACC comprises elected representatives from the region’s constituent Fire Authorities.

How will a Control Room Operator in Wolverhampton know where I am if I make a 999 call?

Caller location software and mapping technology will allow the Control Room Operator to see the caller's location on a map.

What will happen to the 999 calls if the Regional Control Centre is busy?

Any calls that cannot be answered by the Regional Control Centre in Wolverhampton will be passed to the nearest available Regional Control Centre, which will be able to mobilise local fire appliances to incidents within Shropshire.

Will our Regional Control Centre take 999 calls for any other Fire Services?

Yes - Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands and Hereford and Worcester.
