Tuesday This is the night when the Divine Revelation came to the Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wasakm.

19 September Navaratri (nine nights) starts (Hindu) ^ Top

Navaratri
This is one of the greatest festivals. It symbolises the triumph of good over evil and marks the beginning of Autumn. Communities may get together and have dances and feasts to celebrate.

19 September Rosh Hashanah - Jewish New Year ^ Top

Saturday This day celebrates the creation of the world and lasts for 2 days. L'shanah tovah is the traditional greeting for a good new year. It is also a judgement day where god balances good and bad deeds and decides what the next year will bring. Special food is prepared with an emphasis on sweetness.

21 September Eid-ul-Fitr (Muslim) ^ Top

Monday This is a celebration that marks the end of the month of fasting. The early part of this day is spent offering prayers, people wear their best or new clothes and then they have a celebratory meal at home with friends and relatives. Children are given presents or money and adults give money to the needy or poor.

This was established by a United Nations resolution in 1981. The aim of this is to devote a specific time for the UN and people of the world to promote the ideals of peace and demonstrate their commitment to peace.

22 September Autumn Equinox (Pagan) ^ Top

Tuesday This is also known as Mabon or Harvest Home. It is celebrated when day and night are of equal duration.

28 September Yom Kippur (Jewish) ^ Top

Monday

Yom Kippur
This is the most scared and solemn day. People abstain from food and drink for 25 hours, do not wash or wear perfume. Most Jews will want to go to the synagogue on this day.

28 September Dussehra (tenth day) - Festival of Warriors (Hindu) ^ Top

Monday

Dussehra
This is one of the most significant festivals, as it commemorates when Lord Rama triumphed over the demon king, Ravana.
