It is important that people know how they can help themselves and their families in an emergency

The Government has produced a booklet called 'Preparing for emergencies - what you need to know'.

The key messages of this booklet are:

The booklet will ensure that people across the UK have practical, common sense information at their fingertips in the event of an emergency. This is not because of any specific threat but a responsible exercise in ensuring the public is informed in a sensible, practical and helpful way
The booklet promotes clearer understanding, bringing together advice that the Government has already issued in to one practical guide for a better informed public who can help play their part in preventing emergencies and help to deal with them
It covers a wide range of emergencies, including fires and acts of terrorism
It is supported by research that demonstrated the booklet was right and confirmed the public's wish for this
It draws on current best practice advice from experts and practitioners who have been working closely with us to develop the booklet's content
It is supported by emergency planning partners, such as the security service, emergency planning services and front line services such as The Fire and Rescue Service, police and health experts

Follow the links on this page for more information about the booklets.

Copies of the booklet can be downloaded free from the link to Government information on this page.

If you would like a copy of the booklet in an alternative format (eg large print, Braille, audio tape) or in the Welsh language, these are available from the Emergency Planning Unit, Shropshire County Council at EPU@shropshire-cc.gov.uk.
