15 October 2012 Telford house fire mum meets 999 Fire Operator who helped save her life

A young Shropshire mum was today reunited with the fire control operator whose calm voice over the phone helped save her family’s life when they were trapped in the bedroom of their blazing home.

Estelle Guest (24) got to thank Watch Manager Sandra Davies in person when she made a visit to Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service’s control room at the Shrewsbury fire HQ.

15 October 2012 Further warnings about Rural Roads

The Safer Roads Partnership and West Mercia Police are reminding motorists of the dangers that may be present during this time of year as farmers are using the roads more when harvesting and moving their produce.

Agriculture is one of Shropshire’s major industries and harvesting a wide variety of crops at this time of the year sees an increase in agricultural vehicle movements on the road and also an increased potential for road collisions.

05 October 2012 Fundraisers aid Romania

Shropshire fundraisers who collected more than £10,000 to fund a county charity mission to send much needed fire engines to Romania have been praised for their efforts by Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Hundreds of people from across the county held car washes, cake sales, dress down days and auctions while sports clubs held bucket collections to raise the cash which will send four fire engines and a team of 14 volunteers to Romania next week.

Their efforts will help replace “outmoded and cumbersome” equipment and “save lives.”

03 October 2012 5 a side football tournament

As I stand in the queue for the lift on the ground floor of Headquarters (the stairs are looking like a daunting task for some reason!) a number of colleagues have already commented on what a great afternoon was had by all at the Shrewsbury Sports Village on Sunday.

Thanks to the superb efforts of Nick Davies (RW/SY) 13 teams and their supporters came together to revive what has always traditionally been an annual Service 5 a side football tournament.

25 September 2012 Shropshire fire fighters in charity car wash

Shropshire firefighters promise a fast response as always – especially when they clean cars on behalf of the national Fire Fighters Charity on Saturday, September 29th.

Fire crews will be out across the county for the National Car Wash 2012 event – the charity’s largest fundraising event of the year to raise money for injured firefighters.

25 September 2012 Floods in Shropshire

Shropshire firefighters are well prepared for more calls in the wake of further flooding after experiencing one of their busiest days of the year.

Fire control in Shrewsbury was bombarded with calls on Monday as firefighters from across the county dealt with incidents ranging from people trapped in cars, elderly residents needing to be freed from their homes and numerous animal rescues.

Extra control room operators were drafted in to deal with the constant stream of emergencies in an innovative scheme in which secretaries and backroom staff have been specially trained for such events.

24 September 2012 Police appeal after suspected arson in Dawley

Police officers in Telford are investigating following a suspected arson incident in Dawley.
The incident occurred at an address on Lancaster Avenue early on Saturday 15th September.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 1.50am and two appliances from Tweedale and Telford Central attended the property.

24 September 2012 Free electric blanket tests for Shropshire residents

Get your electric blanket tested for free – that is the message from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

With temperatures falling, more people will be dusting off their electric blankets ready for use but they can be a fire risk, warned Alison Teece, of the brigade’s Community Fire Safety department.

They have linked up with a Shrewsbury electrical firm to carry out safety checks on individual blankets at fire stations in Telford, Whitchurch and Wem in October.
