When you are babysitting make sure you do not create any fire hazards
|
All fires should have a secure fireguard |
|
Do not leave a child alone in a room where there is a fire |
|
Do not let children play too close to fires as their clothing may catch light |
|
Keep matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children |
|
Never leave children alone with lighted candles |
If the children in your care are in bed when you are in the house make sure that you know what the family’s fire action plan is. (Ask the adults responsible for the children about this before they leave).
If you have been given permission to smoke while babysitting
- always make sure that any cigarettes are out and cold before you empty the ashtray
- Never leave smoker’s materials where a child can reach them
- Do not leave ashtrays on upholstered furniture
- Never leave the kitchen when you have cooking on the stove

- If you have to answer the door or ‘phone turn the heat off or down
- Make sure that children can’t reach the saucepan handles

- Do you have an emergency contact telephone number?
- Is there a trusted family friend or neighbour you can contact?
- Do you know where the nearest telephone outside the house is?
- Do you know what the smoke alarm sounds like?
| What to do if clothing catches fire |

If clothing catches fire:
- Stop - don’t run the flames will get worse
- Drop - get on the ground or floor
- Roll - back and forward quickly until the flames are smothered
You can help by covering the casualty with clothing or blankets and patting to extinguish the flames. Make sure you protect your own hands before attempting this.
- Raise the alarm - don’t investigate, get everyone up and out of the building
- If it is smoky, stay low, crawl if you have to
- Once you are outside stay there!
- Call 999 - Stay calm and ask for the Fire Service
