Cycle Training Awareness Scheme

Does your child know how to stay safe on wheels?

Child Cycle Awareness training       In 2004 over 3,500 teen cyclists aged 11-16 were killed or injured on Britain's roads.

If you want to protect yourself you must take cycle safety seriously.

Cycle Safety Training ^ Top

From Spring 2007 Shropshire Firefighters will be working with a team of instructors some of which are volunteers from Shropshire County Council and Telford & Wrekin Council to deliver the Cycle Safety Training to Primary School children across the county of Shropshire.

A dedicated team of instructors are running the scheme from March to October. The scheme offers off-road training for children aged nine and over, and on-road courses (if suitable roads are available) for children aged ten and over. The course is delivered in five two-hour sessions over a one week period and costs £15 per pupil.

Courses ran in the Telford & Wrekin are free of charge.

Cycle training is an important part of learning to use the road. The training provides:

How to carry out simple safety checks on a bicycle
Starting and stopping procedures
How to turn left and right at junctions
An improved awareness of other road users
Increased recognition of the dangers that face cyclists
A workbook for each pupil to complete at home each evening
An assessment at the end of the course
Children prepare for their Cycle Training Awareness Course

These courses promote a positive attitude towards safer cycling and provide a firm foundation in the basic manoeuvres upon which experience can be built.

Please ask at your child's school for any courses booked or contact the relevant Road Safety Teams in your area for information about courses.

"Do something positive to reduce road deaths on Shropshire's roads"

Both Shropshire County Council and Telford & Wrekin Council are always looking at recruiting more volunteer instructors. A volunteer could be a parent or a school staff member, as part of the scheme you will be required to complete a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) enhanced check.

As well as being trained to deliver the scheme (Free) you will be playing a vital role for your community by:

Contributing towards child safety
Increasing young persons awareness of road hazards
Making a impact on reducing Road Traffic Collision
You could even be responsible for saving a life, although you will never know who’s

So do not waste any more time, and do something positive to reduce road deaths in the county of Shropshire.
