Aerial Ladder Platform a special appliance that has the capability of reaching floors in buildings which are higher than the ladders carried on 'fire engines' can reach. Used either to provide a high platform from which firefighters can fight a fire, or to enable firefighters to gain access to high places. Normally crewed by two firefighters.

Bulk Water Carrier a special appliance, that looks just like a milk tanker (except its red!), that is capable of carrying 7000 litres of water to where it is needed. Normally crewed by two firefighters.

Environmental Unit a special appliance that is staffed by firefighters, but is paid for by the Environment Agency. It carries equipment that is capable of preventing the spread of, and clearing up after, chemical spillages. It also carries various pumps that are suitable for assisting at incidents involving flooded premises. Normally crewed by two firefighters, but also requires a supporting fire engine to go with it.

Firefighter the term used to describe operational personnel employed to carryout fire fighting duties
Foam Pod a special appliance that carries all of the equipment and foam concentrate required to produce large amounts of foam. It is used to deal with large fires, where the use of water would be ineffective or unsafe eg aircraft fires, petrol spillages etc. Normally crewed by two firefighters, but also requires a supporting fire engine to go with it.

GPS Global Positioning System
A system of satellites, computers, and receivers that is able to determine the latitude and longitude of a receiver on Earth by calculating the time difference for signals from different satellites to reach the receiver.

HGV Heavy Goods Vehicle
Heavy Pumping Unit a special appliance used to pump water over long distances. Capable of pumping up to 8000lpm over 3 km. Normally crewed by two firefighters, but also requires a supporting fire engine to go with it.

Incident Command Vehicle a special appliance, driven to incidents by the specialist Incident Command officers, providing command and control facilities at small and medium sized incidents. Normally crewed by one officer.

L4P (Landrover) a special appliance, consisting of four-wheel drive vehicle (on a Landover chassis) with a small pump in the rear that is capable of pumping 225lpm through a fitted hose reel. Normally crewed by two firefighters.
LGV Long Goods Vehicle
Light Pumping Unit a special appliance used to pump water over long distances. Capable of pumping up to 3000lpm over 1.5 km. Normally crewed by two firefighters, but also requires a supporting fire engine to go with it.

Pinzgauer a special appliance, consisting of a pump and some of the equipment normally found on a fire engine, but on a chassis that enables it to go off road. Has a tank that holds 900 litres of water, and is capable of pumping 560lpm. Normally crewed by two firefighters.

Ranger a pick-up type support vehicle used to transport additional firefighting personnel and equipment to incidents when required.
Retained Retained stations are not permanently staffed, but the appliances on these stations are able to be mobilised within five minutes of a call. They are staffed by firefighters working on the retained duty system. They typically have full time jobs outside of the fire and rescue service and respond from either work or home to their fire station when an emergency call is received. There are twenty retained stations in Shropshire. Two of the wholetime stations, Shrewsbury and Wellington, also have retained personnel on them.
Rescue Pump a fire engine, the same as the Water Tender Ladder, with additional equipment for rescuing persons from road traffic accidents. Also has a tank that holds 1800 litres of water, and is capable of pumping between 2250 and 2700lpm. These appliances are normally crewed by 4 to 6 firefighters.
Rescue Tender a special appliance, not capable of pumping water, which carries heavy duty equipment used to rescue people from road, rail and aeroplane accidents etc. Normally crewed by two firefighters.

Water Rescue Unit a special appliance consisting of a rigid inflatable boat with outboard motor, mounted on a trailer and towed to incidents by a four wheel drive vehicle. Used to rescue people and animals from water in the county. Normally crewed by three firefighters who are fully trained Water Rescue operatives.
Water Tender Ladder a fire engine which has a pump and all of the equipment normally needed to fight fires and rescue people. Has a tank that holds 1800 litres of water, and is capable of pumping between 2250 and 2700lpm. These appliances are normally crewed by 4 to 6 firefighters.
Wholetime Wholetime stations are permanently staffed by firefighters who are able to mobilise to any emergency within one minute of a call. Each station has four watches that provide all year round cover. The three wholetime stations in Shropshire are Shrewsbury, Wellington and Telford Central.
