Temporary Fire Control Operator

Based at Brigade Headquarters, Shrewsbury

Temporary Fire Control Operator

£19,376
Ref: FCOP/08

The Fire and Rescue Service is undergoing a period of considerable change and development. Included within this development is a review of the location and operation of Control Rooms nationally. Under a national government initiative it is currently intended that Shropshire’s existing Control Room based in the Brigade HQ (Shrewsbury) will be replaced with a new Regional Control Centre, to be built at Wolverhampton Business Park adjacent to Junction 2 of the M54. This plan is part of a Government initiative. The new Regional Fire Control premises are not expected to go live until May 2010. The new Regional Fire Control Centres will eventually receive all 999 emergency calls for the region’s Fire and Rescue services.

To support our existing team through this period we have a vacancy for a Fire Control Operator on a fi xed term contract for 2 years. This post is predominantly based at Brigade Headquarters, St Michael’s Street, Shrewsbury but the applicant will be required at times to evacuate and/or exercise at another Fire Control standby facility.

We are seeking to employ a person to work within a small team dedicated to receiving 999 emergency calls, despatching and providing support to operational fi re crews dealing with emergency incidents. Additional responsibilities of the team include a wide range of technical and administrative duties.

You will be expected to work a two-day, two-night, four-day off duty system on a rotational basis that includes weekends and bank holidays. Previous experience of emergency call handling is preferred but not essential, as full training is provided. Interested candidates must have good written and verbal communication skills; be computer literate with keyboard skills of at least 30 words a minute and be able to calm and control situations involving emergency calls.
