Duty System

There are 3 wholetime fire stations within Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, each crewed by 4 Watches: Red, Blue, Green and White Watch. Each Watch operates on a rota system and is conditioned to the shift system. Under this system each period of 24 hours is divided into a day shift and a night shift. The day and night shifts are arranged so that over a fixed number of weeks, the weekly hours of duty performed by each member averages 42 hours.

The shift system in operation within Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is based on 2 day shifts, 2 night shifts, 4 days off. You should note that this shift system operates 365 days per year – Public holidays, including any extra statutory days, are classed as normal working days for duty purposes

Annual Leave

The leave year extends from 1 January to 31 December. Wholetime Firefighters are granted annual leave with pay as follows:

Annual entitlements
On appointment   30 days
Additional leave granted after 5 years service   3 days

Probation Period

Continuing employment is dependent upon the probationer successfully achieving level 3 NVQ Operations in the Community within an agreed period of time.

Promotion

All members of the fire service start as firefighters, which means every recruit has an equal chance of promotion to the senior positions.
