Women working as Firefighters

Do you fancy a new career?

This short questionnaire is part of our work to encourage more applications from women who want to work as firefighters. We need more firefighters, particularly at our retained stations. We are asking women only to complete this so that we can get your views and would like you to return this by email to natalie.hill@shropshirefire.gov.uk or to the address at the back of the questionnaire.

What is the retained duty system? What does it mean?

Retained Duty System Firefighters (RDS) provide a crucial service to the community and work on call using a pager and cover 120+ hours per week (full cover) and 85 -119 (3/4 cover), which can be during the day, evenings and weekends, there is no upper age limit for applicants.

Firefighters must be able to get to the station in 5 minutes and are required to undertake drills one evening per week. Many of our RDS firefighters have full-time jobs and respond to calls either from their places of work or home. They receive an annual retainer fee, disturbances fees and hourly rates for work undertaken, training and annual leave. Their total pay can be between £5,000 - £9,000 per annum, depending on the station and they are called out on average 2-3 times per week depending on how busy their station is.

We would like to ask you some questions to find out what you think about the role, what information you would like and whether you think there is anything stopping you from becoming a firefighter. This information will be used to help us try to attract more females and encourage them to become firefighters.
