The Authority has not seen the need to update its existing strategic IRMP document. This plan states what the Authorities risk reduction priorities are up to March 2008, and gives progress on the implementation of some of the significant risk reduction initiatives being undertaken.
Summary of improvements included in IRMP Action Plan 2007/08
Our Previous IRMP's have detailed how the Authority has developed local standards for the community of Shropshire, following the removal of the Governments recommended response standards for property fires. In place of the old nationally prescribed standards which were based upon the risk to buildings, the Authority's new standards relate to the risk to life; not only in fires but also in road traffic collisions which, because of the amount of roads, represents a significant risk to those living in and passing through the county. This culminated in the introduction of new response standards for 'Life Risk Fires' and Road Traffic Collisions on the 1st April 2006. One of the key issues that we consulted on this year is the redeployment of one wholetime appliance and staff from Telford Central Fire Station to Tweedale Fire Station. This redeployment with give a significant improvement to our emergency response in the Telford area. Other work that the Authority consulted upon this year, included piloting a 'Small Fires Unit' to deal with nuisance fires in the Telford/Tweedale area, thus making more efficient and better use of our resources in reducing disruption to firefighters carrying out vital community safety and other work. We also intend to change the way in which we respond to some incidents where there is no risk to life or injury, and introducing a revised charging policy for lift incidents due to a failure to maintain the equipment.
