As a brigade committed to providing the best possible benefit
for its employees and customers, Shropshire Fire and Rescue has
recognised the need to monitor and manage its performance in order
to continue the improvement of its service delivery to the communities
of Shropshire.
Since recruitment to the Brigade, Project Assurance Officer Helen
Jones has ‘grasped the nettle’ and performance monitoring
within Shropshire Fire and Rescue has gone through something of
a transformation. With the management of statistics within the
organisation receiving a dusting and polishing, the chance to update
the performance reports being produced was also seized.
| There was a 6% decrease in the number of non-fatal casualties (including firefighters) to 15,500 in 2003, representing the fourth consecutive annual fall. However, the
latest figures are 6% higher than they were in 1993 (14,600). |

Tied in with the Strategic Planning also at the core of Brigade
developments, the new reporting system ranks all the Best Value,
Fire Authority and other performance indicators within the five
overall Strategic Aims, and enables a quick and simple evaluation
of the 'health' of each Aim to be made. This information is presented
to senior management on a monthly basis, to keep manager's in-touch
with performance developments and aid decision-making.

Performance highlights are conveyed to all employees via the Brigade publication The Pink. 'Vital Statistics' includes some less serious non-work related stats, as well as details of key performance indicator status in areas as diverse as Operations,
Finance and Fleet management. The bar chart below illustrates how
successful Shropshire has been in meeting national standards of
fire cover for the last 3 financial years, and shows how the Brigade
has managed to continually improve its performance on Riders,
and is now above the upper quartile boundary 98/99, as promoted
in HMFSI guidelines.
