This report covered the implementation of additional training hours, the introduction of XL (Extra Large Cab) Appliances, the introduction of additional hours for cleaning, maintenance and administration, and the roll out of community fire safety work to retained personnel, all of which had been fully implemented.

This report also outlined the implications for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service of the recently published National Review into the Recruitment and Retention of Retained Firefighters.

CFO Taylor presented a report to the Shropshire and Wrekin Fire Authority requesting Members to:

Bullet icon agree the employment of a research company to carry out a retained staff survey
Bullet icon agree the creation of a temporary post to manage the review project and to contribute to the implementation of change

Opinion Research Services were employed to carry out a survey of all Shropshire's retained personnel.

298 questionnaires were sent out, 215 were returned giving a 72% response rate. Questionnaires were also sent out to partners of retained personnel asking for their feedback and concerns.

The position of Retained Project Manager was created.

CFO Kerr presented a report to Members of Shropshire and Wrekin Fire Authority outlining the recruitment and retention problems associated with the retained service in Shropshire. The report asked members to consider setting up a Retained Review Team comprising of Members, officers and retained personnel. Trevor's report was included as an appendix.

Sub Officer Trevor Williams, Officer in Charge of Clun Fire Station submits a report to Chief Fire Officer Ian Kerr highlighting the problems experienced by retained personnel in Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.
