Be Safe Be Seen

Child road safety campaign

This year's Be Safe Be Seen campaign was launched on Tuesday 24 October in preparation for the end of British Summer Time on Sunday 29 October. As the clocks go back and the nights draw in, children are more vulnerable as they are less visible to motorists. We want to encourage all children to wear something bright and take extra care when out and about near roads.

Our key messages are:

Be Safe Be Seen Reflective stickers help children to stand out in the dark nights

Bullet icon Make sure you can be easily seen, especially at night, on dark days and in bad weather
Bullet icon Bright or fluorescent clothes show up best by day, especially in dull or misty weather
Bullet icon By night, reflective material is best and shows up in car headlights - fluorescent clothing doesn't work after dark. Reflective tape can be put on clothing, school bags and equipment
Bullet icon It is an offence to cycle at night without a white front light, a red back light and a red reflector at the back, so make sure all bikes are properly equipped and working
Bullet icon Cross the road at the safest place possible. e.g. zebra, pelican, puffin and patrolled crossings
Bullet icon Use the Green Cross Code: Stop, Look, Listen, Live
Bullet icon If you are out at night, choose routes that are well-lit by streetlights and cross at well-lit places
