Cold weather warning for motorists

The Safer Roads Partnership in Warwickshire and West Mercia is warning motorists in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire and Worcestershire to take extra care as the weather turns colder this winter, particularly on wet roads from the recent heavy rain and flooding.

Person rescued from car stuck in flood water

Crews were called in the early hours of this morning to reports of an adult male trapped in fast flowing flood water who had attempted to cross a ford.

On arrival crews liaised with the Police, West Midlands Ambulance and the HART team.

The rescue teams were met with a torrent of water and a car stuck facing up stream underneath a footbridge.

Shropshire firefighters called to West Country floods

Shropshire firefighters were called out to help colleagues tackle serious floods which swept the West Country.

A total of 20 “on call” firefighters from Shrewsbury, Baschurch, Prees, Clun and Craven Arms used the county’s High Volume Pump appliance in Weston Super Mare to join colleagues from Avon and Somerset and South Wales in fighting the flood waters.

A leading Shropshire firm, which employs four retained firefighters, was praised for allowing them to leave work “at a minute’s notice” to answer the emergency call.

349 Shropshire chimney fires in two years

Chimney fires could increase across the county if the temperature drops below freezing, warned Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters attended a total of 349 home chimney fires over the past two years –and the majority would have been prevented if the householder had the chimney swept.

Arson attack in Trench Road, Telford

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to a fire at M and B Travel in Trench Road, Telford at 7.06am Sunday 25^th November involving a Transit minibus and caravan.

The fire also involved a neighbouring shed containing rabbits.

Two appliances from Wellington and one appliance from Telford attended the scene together with a Fire Investigation Officer.

The fire is being treated as deliberate and anyone with any information is being asked to contact West Mercia Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Smoke alarm saves lives of house fire couple

A smoke alarm woke a couple when fire broke out in their remote Shropshire farmhouse – and saved their lives.

Householder Tracy Knowles today urged everyone to ensure they had smoke alarms installed in their homes after enduring the “terrifying” experience of a house fire in the middle of the night.

“We would have died if it wasn’t for the smoke alarm waking us up at 2.45am,” said Tracy, after the blaze at White Hall Farm, Aston, Oswestry.

Bonfire campaign success

Fire crews across Shropshire are today celebrating another successful safety campaign running up to bonfire night.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has run a campaign, with the help of both police and local authorities, to reduce the number of uncontrolled bonfires over the past four years.

Suspicious fire in Telford

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service attended a property fire in Shawfield Close, Sutton Hill, Telford at 6.49pm Tuesday 30^th October 2012. Crews from Tweedale, Telford, Wellington and an Aerial Ladder Platform attended the scene which involved the 1st floor of a 3 storey property. The property was empty at the time and the fire is being treated as suspicious.

Bonfire letter to Shropshire residents from Safer Shropshire Partnership

Re: Bonfires

We appreciate that some parts of the community hold un-official communal bonfires. Whilst we do not condone these we do understand that historically these have been run in an appropriate manner and can provide an opportunity for our communities to enjoy a social event together.

We therefore ask that any group or individual planning a bonfire contacts Shrewsbury Town Council on 01743 281 010 with their request which will be considered on the grounds of health and safety and risk of disruption to surrounding areas.
