Bring Your A-Game Road Safety

Promoting safer driving on Shropshire's A-Roads

The majority of collisions in Shropshire take place on its busy network of A-roads.

With unexpected hazards, changing road conditions and sharp bends, A-roads bring a variety of risks not seen as regularly during motorway driving.

That's why we are encouraging the people of Shropshire and beyond to bring their A-game to the A-roads of the county, keeping in mind some simple advice to make our roads safer and ensure you reach your destination.

Advice for safer driving

Speed - Adjust your speed to match the road’s potential hazards
Health - Check in with yourself before starting your next journey - are you feeling well enough to drive?
Intoxicants - Alcohol and drugs affect vital reactions. Ensure you have allowed enough time for any drugs or alcohol to leave your system before you drive.
Awareness - Be prepared for unexpected hazards at all times. A-roads often have blind bends and in rural areas it is more likely there could be an obstruction in the road. Always be aware of your surroundings and adjust accordingly.
Judgement - Consider risks, adapting your driving style in response. Is it really safe to overtake? Do you have enough time to spot a hazard and stop?

Did you know?

There are six roads in Shropshire where we have seen a large number of serious collisions and fatalities.

These include:

  • A442
  • A49
  • A53
  • A5
  • A458
  • A41

On these roads alone there have been 163 collisions since 2021. Sadly 39 people lost their lives as a result of these incident and another 168 were seriously injured.

This is why we're working to raise awarenes to all motorists whether you've just passed your test or been driving for years.
