Firefighter Strikes Gold with Safety Campaign

A Shropshire firefighter’s campaign to make fire safety fun for children has proved rock solid with lifesaving messages painted onto stones and distributed around the area.

Mark Smith, Watch Manager at Market Drayton Fire Station, inscribed brightly coloured messages such as “Get Out, Stay Out, Call 999” and “Big or Small, Fire Safety is For All.” The Shropshire Fire and Rescue logo was also added to a total of eight rocks which he then hid in local play parks, car parks and at the library.

Fire Stations Fight Back

Firefighters are fighting back after “despicable” thieves put lives at risk by stealing lifesaving equipment from county fire stations.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has called in SmartWater, the successful crime deterrent and “thief catcher,” to protect equipment from further raids in all 23 Shropshire fire stations.

Safety Messages at the Petrol Pumps

Lifesaving messages are to be emblazoned on petrol pumps to remind Shropshire drivers about fire prevention and road safety.

Busy petrol forecourts in Shrewsbury and Telford will have vivid adverts displayed about the importance of regular smoke alarm checks and to remind motorists to be aware of vulnerable cyclists and pedestrians especially during the dark wintry months.

Fire Safety Boost for Much Wenlock

Much Wenlock welcomed its brand new fire engine at a ceremony held at the town’s fire station which will make the rural area safer during fires and major incidents.

It was the weekly drill night for the town’s 11 firefighters but also in attendance were the Mayor and Mayoress of Much Wenlock, members of Much Wenlock Town Council and Shropshire’s Deputy Chief Fire Officer.

Firefighters Prepare for Any Emergency

Shropshire firefighters are ready for any emergency and in Market Drayton they have been fine tuning their skills to deal with a chemical spillage.

The on call fire crew arrived at their fire station for their weekly drill night to be called to action to cope with an exercise involving the outbreak of an unknown chemical in a building where all but one of the occupants had escaped.

More Women Firefighters

More women from across Shropshire want to become firefighters after attending the latest taster session at a county fire station.

A total of ten toured Market Drayton fire station on Saturday to hear about how firefighting is a career choice for both men and women at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

They were shown around fire appliances, tried on fire kit for size and put on breathing apparatus under instruction from the Market Drayton crew.

Have You Got A CO Alarm ?

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents in Shropshire to protect themselves against “the deadly threat” of carbon monoxide poisoning and ensure they have a CO alarm in the home as part of Gas Safety Week 2017 from Sept 18 to 25th

They want the public to be aware about the main symptoms of “the silent killer” often caused by a faulty boiler or cooker, blocked flue, chimney or vent.

Electric Blankets Danger

Electric blankets can be a serious fire safety risk, warn Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, which is offering free checks at some of their county fire stations in September.

A quarter of electric blankets are condemned as dangerous after they fail the test, revealed Fire Safety Officer Alison Teece.

“Your electric blanket may appear safe, especially if it is not very old but damage to the blanket is not always visible and this can lead to it catching fire,” warned Alison.
