Recruiting "On call" Firefighters in Shropshire

 

An appeal has gone out for more “on call” firefighters across Shropshire but they are especially needed in both Prees and Newport.

Anyone interested can turn up at two recruitment events being held at Newport Fire Station, Salters Lane, on March 12 from 6pm to 9pm and Saturday, March 28 from 10am to 1pm.

There are a total of 15 firefighters who cover the Newport area but they need more with six recently retiring or moving away.

While there are are 11 firefighters in Prees but “we can take 16,” says Watch Manager Tony Peck, who works at a concrete plant.

Women Who Want To Be Firefighters

 

Women who want to be firefighters turned out for a “taster” session at a Shropshire fire station.

Attending the taster session on Saturday at Oswestry Fire Station were women aged between 23 and 47 and included mums whose children were leaving for university, a child care worker, butcher, fitness instructor and a business support worker.

They learned what it takes to join the county’s 300 plus “on call” fully trained firefighters who deal with around the clock emergencies.

My Mum's A Firefighter

 

A campaign to get more women to become firefighters has been launched as three of the latest recruits get ready to join Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

A primary school teaching assistant from Much Wenlock, Church Stretton fitness instructor and Clun pub barmaid are undergoing training at the fire training school in Telford to bring to 19 the number of women now serving as county firefighters.

We are holding a taster event to encourage women to look at becoming part-time professional firefighters. To be a retained firefighter you need to live within 5 minutes of your local fire station in Shropshire, be fit and reliable, and be able to attend for duty at any time within your agreed hours. We provide training, support, promotion opportunities, excellent pay and conditions of service and a strong commitment to equality.

Hadley Learning Community Multi-Cultural Community Mela

Principal Dr Gill Eatough invited everyone to Hadley Learning Community to be part of their multi-cultural, community Mela on Tuesday 25th November 2014 to celebrate Eid and Diwali. Shropshire Fire Rescue Service were proud to a part of the event. There were lots of stalls, fantastic food and entertainment for everyone. All proceeds raised were donated to Children in Need.

AWARDS TO TOP NEW FIREFIGHTER RECRUITS

 

A total of 25 new firefighter recruits completed their intensive initial training courses at Telford’s firefighter training centre and had “key” qualities including the ability to keep going “when it gets tough” and the physical courage to complete the demands put upon them, said Chief Fire Officer John Redmond, at their "passing out" ceremony held in Shrewsbury.

NEW RECRUITS JOIN A SUCCESSFUL SHROPSHIRE FIRE SERVICE

Firefighters who put out fires and carry out car crash rescues in Shropshire have successfully cut the number of emergencies they attend by more than a third in almost a decade, said the county’s Chief Fire Officer.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service had been “very successful” in its main role to prevent emergency incidents happening through successful public education campaigns working with the help of other organisations, John Redmond told the latest firefighter recruits at their “passing out” ceremony at the Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury tonight. (Monday, November 17th)

DEPUTY CHIEF FIRE OFFICER

 

The new Deputy Chief Fire Officer of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has been appointed by Shropshire and Wrekin Fire and Rescue Authority.

Rod Hammerton, the former Assistant Chief Fire Officer for South Wales, steps up to replace John Redmond, who took over as Chief Fire Officer at Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service in the Summer.

TELFORD FIRE STATION OPEN DAY

Telford Fire Station held a successful open day with eye catching demonstrations including a chip pan fire as firefighters and community fire safety officers showcased their skills to display the wide variety of work they do.

Adults and children visited the innovative “smoke house” used to educate people of all ages about fire safety and show them how to escape from a potentially life threatening house fire.
