Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service are working in partnership with RMW Electrical Services Ltd of Shrewsbury in order to offer FREE electric blanket testing in Telford and North Shropshire.
With temperatures falling, more people will be dusting off their electric blankets ready for use but they can be a fire risk, warned Alison Teece, of the brigade's Community Fire Safety department. Danger signs to look out for include frayed fabric, scorch marks, exposed elements, creasing or folding, damp patches, tie tapes damaged or missing, worn flex and loose connections.
Bedroom fires caused by faulty electric blankets are on the decrease in Shropshire due to householders heeding fire safety but they still account for 5,000 house fires nationwide every year.
Community Fire Safety officers will be at Walton Court, Sheltered Housing Scheme, Village Way, Oakengates, Telford TF2 6TL from 9.00am to 4.45pm.
To book your appointment call 01743 260 260 between Monday 1st October and Wednesday 10th October during office hours.
If you are unable to bring your blanket along to be tested, here are some useful safety tips:
- Never buy or use a second hand blanket.
- Do not use with a hot water bottle.
- Check regularly for scorch marks or visual signs of damage.
- Always read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- More importantly, make sure you have working smoke alarms on each level of your home.
