Smell Of Burning

At 09:40 on Monday, 9 November, 2015, SFRS Fire Control received a call reporting a fire classified as Smell Of Burning in Telford.

2 fire appliances were mobilised from Telford Central and Wellington. An Operations officer was in attendance.

Crews used the following equipment to tackle the fire:

  • Breathing Apparatus (BA)
  • Hosereel jet
  • Small gear

Small fire involving candle wax on a storage heater. Two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one 9 metre ladder and breaking in tools in use. Ventilation in progress. Fire service were alerted to the incident by a neighbour informing us that the smoke alarm was activating, this is a reminder to never leave candles unattended and check your smoke alarms weekly.

Smoke alarms cost as little as £5 and are available at most DIY stores. It is recommended that smoke alarms should be fitted on the ceiling one per floor and they should be 30cm away from walls or light fittings (Usually top and bottom of stairs). Smoke alarms should be tested weekly by pressing the button to briefly activate the alarm. Change the battery once a year (unless it's a ten year alarm) and gently vacuum the alarm twice a year to remove dust from the sensors.
