Do you know someone who would benefit from a safe and well check from the fire service?
Are they wary about having another person in their home, or would simply find a phone call easier to manage? A virtual safe and well visit may be the answer
What will I need?
- Around 30 minutes to have a chat with one of our Prevention Officers
- A smart phone with a camera
- WhatsApp or Teams app on your phone (both free to install)

What can I expect from the virtual Safe and Well visit?
A member of our prevention team will:
- Make contact with you to arrange a convenient time to carry out the virtual visit
- Message you to confirm this appointment
- Consider the main causes of fire in your home and how you can prevent them
- Discuss how to test and maintain your smoke alarms with you
- Offer advice and guidance when making an escape plan from your home
- Offer further referrals to our partner agencies, to ensure you remain safe and well at home.
- Send you a follow up letter and safe and well pack, with further information and contact details
- Ask you to complete a feedback survey to enable us to constantly improve the service we deliver. Access to the feedback form will be via a link found in your letter, or you can access it below:

What if I don’t have working smoke alarms?
Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service recommend that you have at least one working smoke alarm on each level of your home, ideally located on your escape route.
However, if you don’t have working smoke alarms, we are able to offer to fit these for you in person, free of charge, or send the smoke alarms to you in the post if you or someone you know can fit these.
To qualify for a free smoke alarm from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, one or more of the following criteria must be met:
- Over 75 years old
- Long term sickness
- Have a disability
- Be physically unable to fit smoke alarms
Checking the ID of the Prevention team
End to end encryption of the call, message to confirm officer, can call HQ to check this. Officer in uniform, has photo ID can opt out of call at any time if unsure.

The visit is not to judge your lifestyle, but to keep you safe from fire and other risks.
