A daughter and mother tragically perished in a blaze that ripped through their detached family home in Fishers Lock, Newport.

More than 30 firefighters took three hours to bring under control a massive blaze which tore through a derelict Shrewsbury pub at about 9pm last night.

Crowds of up to 100 people gathered outside The Harlescott Inn to watch as five fire crews tackled the flames which leapt as high as 40ft into the air.

Fire chiefs said officers were hampered by dangerous conditions inside the derelict pub, in Whitchurch Road, because windows and doors had been boarded up.

Year 7 pupils were dealing with rapid fire questions in the Be Cool Be Safe competition which teaches 11-year-olds all about general safety including tips on how to stay safe with fire, water, on the roads and railways, how to deal with school bullies, facts on alcohol and tobacco, and what to do in an emergency.

A fire safety campaign to fit free smoke alarms into homes in Telford and Newport is certainly saving lives, said The Wrekin MP.

Mark Pritchard praised Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service for initiating the campaign which has spread across Shropshire.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service have issued a warning following a tragic accident involving a Telford family's pet dog falling through a frozen lake.

Mrs Amanda Berry was walking with her two daughters' at Apley Wood yesterday afternoon when the dog ran off chasing ducks across the lake before falling through the ice.
