Garage Fires lead to Joint Investigation

An investigation has been launched by local Police and Fire Officers in Shrewsbury after a serious garage fire occurred during the early hours of Saturday morning.

Two fire appliances and an Incident Commander from Shrewsbury fought for two hours at the scene in Salters Lane, Coleham where they were faced with a blaze involving three single storey terraced garages and four vehicles, two of which were destroyed.

The origin of the fire was doubtful and Police and Fire Investigation officers were called to try to determine the cause of the fire.

Fire Control were then alerted to a subsequent fire at the rear of Moreton Cottages, Coleham and a further appliance from Shrewsbury was sent to the scene. This time the fire involved a Wheelie Bin and was also found to be of doubtful origin.

A spokesperson for Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said, "If the fires were started deliberately then the three appliances from Shrewsbury committed at this incident would have been unable to attend any further callouts in the Shrewsbury area. Appliances from other surrounding stations would then have had to be called to the area, potentially delaying the attendance times and possible rescues if needed. This obviously could have had serious consequences".

Investigations are still ongoing by both the Police and Fire service to try to discover the cause of the fires.
