Year 3 – Safety Squad

SFRS personnel deliver a PowerPoint presentation at the front of the class (assembly style) asking the group to answer questions regarding fire safety. Answers to the questions are discussed with the class. Along with questions and answer section, children take part in practical activities including practising making a 999 call, where to place smoke alarms, obstacle course/escape plan and Stop, Drop and Roll. Children are also provided a worksheet to take home, which includes a blank escape plan and a quiz as a knowledge check of what they have learnt.

Year 6 – Crucial Crew

Crucial Crew is a multi-agency event, organised by four organisations around the county. Schools attend the event in their local area, where they are split into groups and visit every scenario, for 12-15 minutes, led by different agencies delivering life skills education.

We have two objectives: to raise awareness of fire hazards within the home and to educate on the consequences of deliberate fire setting.

The fire service scenario uses a dome style gazebo tent to highlight the dangers which could be present within the home. Children identify the hazards inside the tent and consider what could cause a fire, how to prevent them, and the importance of smoke alarms and escape plans. Additionally, they take part in an activity using a map of Shropshire to identify the impact of deliberate fire setting.
