Beyond the Fire Ground

Preserving the History and Heritage of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service

Behind every fire station, every incident and every uniform is a story worth remembering.

Beyond the Fire Ground is a historical research and heritage initiative dedicated to discovering, documenting and preserving the rich history of firefighting across Shropshire.

From the earliest days of organised firefighting to the development of the modern Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, our aim is to ensure that the people, places and events that have shaped our Service are not forgotten.

Through historical research, photographs, archive material and personal recollections, we are bringing these stories back to life and making them accessible to serving and retired personnel, their families, local communities and anyone with an interest in our firefighting heritage.

Our Work

Our ongoing projects include:

Historical Research and Storytelling: Researching significant incidents, notable individuals, fire stations and events that have shaped firefighting in Shropshire, and sharing their stories through online articles.
Preserving Memories: Collecting photographs, documents, memorabilia and personal recollections from serving and retired firefighters, their families and members of the public.
Fire Service Heritage and Archives: Identifying, recording and helping to preserve historical material that provides a valuable insight into the development of the Service.
Education and Learning: Using our history to support learning, training and an understanding of how firefighting and the Service have evolved.
Community Engagement: Sharing our research and discoveries through online publications, social media and opportunities to connect with the communities our firefighters have served for generations.

Learning from Our Past

Our history is more than a record of what has happened. It provides valuable opportunities to learn from the experiences, challenges and achievements of those who served before us.

Historical incidents, changes in equipment, operational procedures and significant developments within the Service all help us understand how firefighting has evolved and why we work in the way we do today.

This heritage also plays an important role in introducing new recruits to the traditions, values and identity of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, helping them appreciate the generations of firefighters whose dedication and experiences have shaped the organisation they are joining.

By connecting our past with the present, we aim to encourage reflection, learning and pride in our Service.

The Fire Service Museum at Telford

Work is currently underway to develop a dedicated Fire Service heritage museum at Telford Fire Station.

The museum will bring together historical equipment, uniforms, photographs, documents and memorabilia to celebrate the history of firefighting across Shropshire.

The project remains a work in progress, with the aim of creating a lasting collection that supports education, learning and the preservation of our heritage for future generations.

Our Retired Members – Keeping the Connection Alive

The history of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service lives not only in photographs and documents, but in the memories and experiences of the people who served.

Our retired members are an invaluable part of the Service’s heritage. Their stories offer a unique insight into the incidents they attended, the colleagues they worked alongside and the changes they witnessed throughout their careers.

Beyond the Fire Ground aims to maintain these important connections, encouraging retired personnel and their families to share their memories, photographs and experiences.

By recording and preserving these personal accounts, we can celebrate their contribution, recognise their service and ensure that the stories of previous generations continue to be shared with those who follow in their footsteps.

Once part of the Service, always part of its history.

Discover Our Stories

One of the main ways we share our research is through Beyond the Fire Ground, our online historical publication.

Our articles explore remarkable incidents, forgotten tragedies, extraordinary acts of courage and the lives of those who served before us.

Each story is researched using historical records, newspaper archives, photographs and personal accounts, helping to preserve an important part of Shropshire’s social and emergency services history.

Can You Help Preserve Our History?

History is not just found in official records. Often, the most valuable stories are held in family photograph albums, personal collections and the memories of those who were there.

We would love to hear from anyone who has:

Historical photographs of Shropshire firefighters, fire stations, appliances or incidents.
Old documents, newspaper cuttings, equipment or memorabilia.
Personal memories of serving in the Fire Service or family stories passed down through generations.
Information about former firefighters or significant events in the history of the Service.

Whether you have a single photograph, a fascinating story or an entire collection, your contribution could help preserve a piece of history that might otherwise be lost.
