A firefighter who is one of three generations of the same family to serve at Whitchurch Fire Station is to retire at the end of March after a 37 year career with Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Postman Graham Field (55) was inspired to join the fire service as an on call firefighter to follow in the footsteps of his father Eric who had a 23 year firefighting career.

His son Matt also joined 11 years ago.

Graham has been serving the Whitchurch community since 1980 and attended many serious incidents over the years. He was at Cox’s chemical fire and the COD Donnington fires in Telford.

He said it was sometimes “tricky” juggling his two jobs.

“The hardest part of being an on call firefighter is being called to a fire in the middle of the night and then having to get up early the next day for work. But it is very rewarding.

“I have enjoyed my time with the service but there have been some difficult incidents and nasty accidents.

“Thankfully the other firefighters are like family and are a great group of lads so we support each other.”

Graham’s last day is on March 31 with a planned retirement party in April.
