Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are a great way to gain experience in a new area of work, or use as a stepping stone into your future career

At Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service, we offer a range of apprenticeships throughout our departments and we have compiled case studies from some of our apprentices past and present below.

Emily - Business and Administration Level 2

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?

After getting my A Levels I didn’t feel university was the right path for me, I was keen to work and be creative. An apprenticeship is a great way to gain a qualification while going straight into working life.

What apprenticeship are you currently doing/what apprenticeship did you complete with SFRS?

I completed the Level 2 in Business and Admin whilst being based in Admin Support for 15 months.

Why did you choose to do your apprenticeship with SFRS?

I’ve always had a great interest in working within the public sector and had ambitions in college to work as a police officer or fire fighter so I felt it was a great opportunity to get my foot in the door and start learning the skills required.

What qualification will you have once your apprenticeship is complete/what qualifications did you gain from your apprenticeship?

Level 2 in Business and Administration, I also gained a Level 1 and Level 2 in ICT as part of my development on top of my GCSE.

What do you gain personally from doing an apprenticeship?

I started my apprenticeship when I was 18 and I feel it’s really helped me to grow as a person, I went straight into a professional work environment from college which means I now have 3+ years’ experience in the fire service at the age of 22. I worked on the front desk which straight away helped to improve my confidence and helped me to develop key communication skills for future work. By entering into my apprenticeship after just 15 months I got a full time job working in the Technical Services department as a procurement officer, which for me was a huge achievement as I had progressed from an Apprentice to a permanent member of staff.

How have you found it working for SFRS?

I have thoroughly enjoyed working for Shropshire Fire Service. From the minute I arrived I was made to feel welcome and proud of my achievements. Everyone was fully supportive. It was a huge learning curve as I had to adapt to adult working life at a young age, however, I believe it’s given me a huge amount of experience of a very well run public service.

What three things do you like most about working for SFRS?

I would say the people, we often refer to The Fire Service as a ‘fire family’ which couldn’t be more true. Followed by this I would say the support with extra qualifications and development and finally the challenge, it’s still an emergency service at the end of the day and at times we do have to work in pressured environments, but the challenge allows you to develop as a person and improve your experience.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship with SFRS and if so, why?

Yes I would, as in my personal experience I have gained a full time job, additional qualifications and it could lead to a career for life for most individuals. It is a great starting point to enable personal development and prepare for working life.

If you have completed your apprenticeship, what roles have you gone onto afterwards within the Service and how long have you been with us?

Technical Services Officer, 3+ years.
