Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service has welcomed the latest update from His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS), following a revisit inspection carried out in July 2026. HMICFRS confirmed that the Service has made positive progress in addressing the Cause for Concern identified during its 2024 inspection and has now closed one of the five recommendations made at that tim The recommendation relating to reporting accurate and detailed finance and risk information to the Fire Authority has been formally closed after inspectors recognised significant improvements in financial management, governance and reporting arrangements. While this recommendation has been closed, HMICFRS has confirmed that the overall Cause for Concern and four recommendations remain open as the Service continues work to strengthen strategic oversight, risk management, performance management and data and analysis capabilities. The report highlights a range of improvements already delivered, including refreshed governance arrangements, the introduction of a new Performance and Scrutiny Committee, strengthened financial leadership and investment in digital, data and project management capability.
HMICFRS also acknowledged the efforts of staff across the organisation, stating:
“It is clear that individuals in the service have completed a great deal of work in response to the cause of concern. Staff that have joined the service in important roles in the organisation are making positive changes. They have made a great effort to make sure that their work is thorough, detailed and fit for purpose.”
