HMO landlords urged to apply for licences ahead of August deadline

Landlords of smaller Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) are being reminded to apply for a licence before Telford & Wrekin Council’s new additional licensing scheme comes into force on 25 August. Under the new rules, HMOs occupied by three or four tenants will require a licence.

The scheme, approved by the Council’s Cabinet following public consultation, forms part of the Better Homes for All programme, which aims to improve standards across the private rented sector. Landlords who submit an eligible application before 24 August can benefit from a 10 per cent discount on licence fees.

Landlords who make a complete and valid application before the scheme starts will be able to continue operating their property while their application is processed. However, those who fail to obtain the appropriate licence could face enforcement action, including fines or prosecution.

Further information about the scheme, including eligibility, fees and application details, is available at: www.telford.gov.uk/public-protection/licensing/houses-in-multiple-occupancy-hmos/
