The UK national terrorism threat level has today been raised from SUBSTANTIAL to SEVERE, meaning that a terrorist attack is now considered highly likely.
The change has been made by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC), which sets the threat level independently of ministers. The decision is based on a rigorous and ongoing assessment of the latest intelligence and wider risk factors, both in the UK and overseas.
The increase is described as a precautionary measure. While the threat level has risen, there is no intelligence to suggest an attack is imminent.
The decision follows yesterday’s stabbing in Golders Green, which has been declared an act of terrorism, and reflects concerns about individuals or small groups in the UK seeking to advance Islamist or extreme right‑wing ideologies through serious violence.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant but not alarmed.
“While this change will understandably cause concern, particularly within Jewish communities, the public should continue to go about their daily lives. Remaining alert and reporting anything suspicious to the police can help keep everyone safe.”
As part of national protective measures, the Government has committed additional funding for increased police patrols and protective security, particularly to protect Jewish communities. Security arrangements remain under constant review and may include an increased visible police presence.
Anyone who sees or hears something that does not feel right is encouraged to report it:
- Call 999 in an emergency or where there is an immediate threat to life
- Report concerns in confidence via the Anti‑Terrorist Hotline or gov.uk/ACT
The thoughts of all agencies remain with the victims of yesterday’s attack and the wider Jewish community.
