Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service Advises Public to “Think Before You Sink” When Drinking This Summer

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is urging people to “Think Before You Sink” this summer, as part of its ongoing campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of water when combined with alcohol.

With warmer weather drawing more people to pubs, riversides, and open water, SFRS is reminding the public to plan ahead and stay safe when socialising. 54% of people involved in water-related incidents never intended to enter the water, highlighting how quickly situations can change.

SFRS is encouraging everyone to take simple, practical steps to reduce their risk:

  • Plan your journey home before you go out – Arrange a lift or pre-book a taxi before drinking.
  • Avoid routes near water – Even familiar paths can become dangerous, particularly at night or under the influence.
  • Stay out of the water when drinking alcohol – Cold water shock can take hold in seconds, and hidden hazards can be dangerous.
  • Stick with friends – Always walk home together and never leave anyone to make their way alone.
  • Know what to do in an emergency – If you or someone else enters the water, remember to Float to Live: tilt your head back, keep calm, control your breathing, and signal for help.

Tragically, around one in five people who drown have alcohol or drugs in their system, ensure you take steps to keep you and others safe.

Cathryn Williams, Prevention Officer and Road and Water Safety Officer at SFRS, said:

“This summer, we’re asking everyone to Think Before You Sink. Whether you’re out with friends or enjoying the world cup, alcohol can quickly affect your judgement, making water far more dangerous than you might expect. Plan your journey home before you go out, avoid walking near water, and always stay with your friends. A simple change, like taking a different route or booking a taxi, could save your life. If you do find yourself in the water, remember to Float to Live – tilt your head back, stay calm, and focus on your breathing until help arrives.”
